Building Permits

The City of Wakefield adopted zoning and building regulations in 1994 and uses these various codes to make sure any new or renovated structure is built to International Code standards.  Building permits are required by the City of Wakefield for all building or renovation projects.  You can obtain an application from the City Clerk’s office at 405 Main Street.  Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  All building permits must be reviewed by the Building Inspector and approved by the City Council.  Building permits must be submitted five days prior to the City Council meeting.  For large projects that require utility extensions or new services, those building permits must be filed 60 days prior to the City Council meeting.  The Wakefield City Council meets the second Wednesday of each month.

The following code books were adopted by the City of Wakefield, by Ordinance and are currently in use by the Department. All codes can be viewed at the City office.

  •    2021 International Residential Code
  •    2021 International Building Code
  •    2021 International Plumbing Code
  •    2020 National Electrical Code

A copy of the above codes is kept in the City Clerk’s Office at 405 Main Street and can be viewed at any time during normal business hours.  The planning jurisdiction of the City of Wakefield includes the Wakefield corporate limits and the area within one mile of the corporate limits.

The designated Building Inspector is Chad Mackling.  The Building Inspector is given the authority to enforce these codes through interpretation and through adoption of various policies and procedures to help clarify the codes.
