Licensing
Dogs must be licensed with the City of Wakefield within 30 days of acquisition or moving to Wakefield. Licenses must be renewed annually by June 30th of each year. Proof of rabies vaccination for the ensuing year will need to be provided at time of licensing.
Licensing fees
- Before June 30th: neutered/spayed-$5.00 – not neutered/spayed- $10.00
- Penalty After June 30th: $25 no matter if neutered/spayed.
Limit per Household
No household within the city limits shall have more that three dogs. Offspring of dogs will be allowed to be nursed and raised until eight weeks of age and at that time must be removed from the property where kept to reduce the total number of dogs to a maximum of three.
Dogs at Large
A dog shall be deemed running at large if off its property and not under the control or restraint of a person. All dogs found running at large will be impounded by the City or the local law enforcement office. If you see a dog running at large during the day, please contact the city office at 402-287-2080. After hours, please contact the Dixon County Sheriff's non-emergency number at 402-287-2286. Impounded dogs can be claimed at the City Office at 405 Main Street. An impound fee will be charged per offense. A $5.00 boarding fee will also be charged per day of impoundment.
Barking Dogs
Dogs can not be allowed to continually or frequently bark, howl, or yelp which will annoy or disturb any neighborhood or person. Dogs shall not be allowed to habitually bark at or chase pedestrians or vehicles while they are on public sidewalks or streets of the City.
Banned Breeds
Any Pitbull Terrier, which shall be defined as any American Pitbull Terrier or Staffordshire Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier, or any mixed breed of dog which contains as an element of its breeding, the breed of American Pitbull Terrier or Staffordshire Bull Terrier or America Staffordshire Terrier, so as to be identifiable as partially of the breed of American Pitbull Terrier or Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or America Staffordshire Bull Terrier; or any Doberman Pinscher, Rottweiler, Chow or Shar Pei breed of dog, or any mixed breed of dog which contains as an element of its breeding, the breed of any Doberman Pinscher, Rottweiler, Chow or Shar Pei, so as to be identifiable as partially of the breed of Doberman Pinscher, Rottweiler, Chow or Shar Pei shall not be allowed in the corporate limits of the City of Wakefield.
